My Art Work

“The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeing new landscapes, but in having new eyes.”

- Marcel Proust -

I have a storytelling nature; this is evident also in my photography and my paintings. Some stories are personal, others through observation, listening. Being a keen traveler, I avoid tourism attractions and hotspots, and rather venture off into the heart of the land I visit. I love scouting – it is always rewarding.

I use my photographs as reference for my paintings and try to convey my experience and emotions at the time of my visit.

Anita Henning - Malefetsane

Malefetsane

When I met him, he used to live in a very remote village in Lesotho. He was already old. As much as I tried to explain why I wanted to take his picture, he remained worried but relented. I managed to capture his concern.

Anita Henning - Mother

Mother

Slowly, surely my mother slipped into a world of silence; hazed vision and not always capable of identifying her surroundings. The decline was slow, yet brutal.

Anita Henning - Acorn Sweepers

Acorn Sweepers

Daily we are surrounded by opportunities; you just need to look and see. Walking the streets with a camera is always rewarding some way or another. Often you get home, surprised with your valuable find. These ladies were sweeping the acorns at the Town Hall and quite enjoyed the exercise.
Anita Henning - Bethlehem Station

Bethlehem Station

The deserted train station was a popular site to visit for me as a photographer. Sadly, on my most recent visit, the building had been vandalized and burnt.

My father

I am always inspired by the drawing skill of some artists; I realize it takes practice – I hope to get there. This is a charcoal drawing of my father.
Anita Henning - Jan Silver and His Goats

Jan Silver and His Goats

Jan Silwer used to live in Riemvasmaak – most northern part of South Africa. He was a nomadic farmer and amongst his community, he was regarded a wealthy man. I had the privilege to join him on one of his inspection rounds, checking on the herd, on his donkey cart, an experience I will never forget.
Witsand Sanddune

Witsand Sanddune

Witsand in the Northern Cape in South Africa has many faces. I recently did this painting after a visit in October 2022.

Landscapes

These landscapes are from the district where I live – back here in South Africa. During the terrible lockdown / shutdown, I often ventured off into the veld with my dogs and camera, to maintain sanity. Some of the scenes may seem grim – winter in the Eastern Free State.
